India’s EV revolution has, until recently, largely been a two-row affair. Hatchbacks, compacts, and even sleek coupe-SUVs have led the charge — but ask any Indian family whether they’d truly give up a third row, and you’ll hear a very firm “no.” Mahindra knows this. And with the XEV 9S, they’ve set out to answer that question once and for all.

The XEV 9S is India’s first born-electric seven-seat SUV — not a converted ICE vehicle wearing an electric badge, but a ground-up EV built on Mahindra’s cutting-edge INGLO platform. It wears the XUV 700’s trusted silhouette like a favourite shirt while packing the tech DNA of the XEV 9E beneath it. The result is something genuinely new: a family SUV that doesn’t ask you to compromise on practicality, range, or price.

Why the XEV 9S Exists — and Why It Matters

Mahindra’s INGLO-based electric twins, the BE 6 and XEV 9E, arrived as bold statements of intent. Together, they clocked an impressive 30,000 units in just seven months — proving that Indian buyers were ready for premium electric SUVs. But both cars wore coupe-like silhouettes with cramped rear ends, leaving one very large gap in the lineup: genuine three-row family usability.

Enter the XEV 9S, a car Mahindra first teased in concept form back in 2022 under the name XEV e8. It spent years waiting in the wings while its siblings stole the spotlight. Now it’s here, and it may well be the most important Mahindra of the generation — not for its headline performance, but for its potential to democratise electric mobility for millions of Indian families.

“The XEV 9S isn’t just another EV. It’s Mahindra’s most commercially critical car — the one designed to bring real volumes and real families into the electric fold.”

Design: Familiar Face, Fresh Purpose

Stand next to a Mahindra XUV 700, then look at the XEV 9S. The family resemblance is unmistakable — deliberately so. Mahindra understands that one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption is unfamiliarity, and by giving the XEV 9S the XUV 700’s trustworthy proportions, they’ve created an electric SUV that doesn’t demand courage to buy.

That said, this is emphatically not an electrified XUV 700. Fitting the INGLO platform’s architecture into that bodywork required significant re-engineering. The wheelbase is 2,762mm — 13mm shorter than the XEV 9E and BE 6 — and the overall length comes in at 4,737mm, slightly longer than the ICE XUV 700 thanks to new bumper designs.

Up front, the LED lighting signature borrows heavily from the XEV 9E’s full-width DRL treatment that runs across the nose and cascades downward to frame the fascia. However, the lighting element itself is noticeably thicker and more imposing, giving the 9S a bold, confident presence that suits its family-hauler brief. The lower bumper is finished in gloss black with twin slim cooling slots — functional, yes, but also aesthetically considered.

The profile is where the XUV 700 DNA truly shines. That pronounced shoulder line, the strong character creases, and the now-iconic kick-up at the C-pillar are all present. The 18-inch aero-optimised wheels with tall 235/60 R18 rubber fill the arches nicely while contributing meaningfully to range. Flush door handles complete the aerodynamic look. The rear is a cohesive blend of old and new: familiar XUV 700 sheet metal topped by a connecting trim panel housing distinctive hexagonal LED tail-lights, finished with tasteful XEV 9S badging rather than a trendy connected light bar. It is handsome, purposeful, and unmistakably a Mahindra.

Interior: Three Screens, Three Rows, Maximum Ambition

Step inside and the 9S announces its XEV family credentials immediately. The dashboard is lifted almost wholesale from the XEV 9E — and that is absolutely not a complaint. A sweeping triple-screen layout spans the full width of the dashboard, housing a 12.3-inch driver display, a central infotainment screen, and a dedicated passenger screen. The two-spoke steering wheel, olive green leatherette trim, and premium switchgear all follow. The overall effect is genuinely futuristic while remaining tasteful.

The difference from its coupe sibling shows up where it really counts: the rear. The XEV 9S’s more upright SUV silhouette and taller roofline translate into meaningful improvements in headroom and comfort for second-row occupants. The second row not only slides for flexibility but also offers ventilated seats — a thoughtful touch for India’s punishing summers. A one-touch tumble function provides easy access to the third row.

The third row, however, comes with caveats. Access is easy enough, and children will be perfectly comfortable, but taller adults will find headroom tight and the knees-up seating position quite pronounced over longer distances. For occasional family use and short trips, it works. For a three-hour highway run with adults in row three, you’ll want to reconsider.

Notable features include a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a panoramic sunroof that floods the cabin with light, multi-colour ambient lighting, second-row entertainment screens (on top variants), a full ADAS suite with Level 2 driver assistance, a 360-degree camera, and a head-up display. There is also a frunk — a useful 150-litre underbonet storage space courtesy of the EV drivetrain — and rear AC vents as standard.

Battery, Range & Charging: Three Choices for Every Buyer

One of the XEV 9S’s most compelling aspects is its layered battery strategy. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, Mahindra offers three LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery options to suit different budgets and use patterns:

BatteryPowerTorqueMIDC Range0–100 kph
59 kWh (LFP)231 hp380 Nm521 km~8 sec (est.)
70 kWh (LFP)245 hp380 Nm600 km~7.5 sec (est.)
79 kWh (LFP)286 hp380 Nm679 km7 sec (claimed)

All variants are rear-wheel drive, inheriting the INGLO platform’s native RWD architecture — a deliberate departure from the XUV 700’s front-wheel-drive layout. The LFP chemistry choice prioritises longevity and safety over peak energy density: Mahindra is so confident in these cells that they’ve backed every XEV 9S with a 15-year or lifetime battery warranty for the first owner. That is genuinely remarkable, and it should remove one of the last lingering anxieties around EV ownership in India.

Charging options are equally well-considered. The XEV 9S accepts up to 180 kW of DC fast charging, taking the 79 kWh pack from 20 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. AC charging via 7.2 kW or 11.2 kW home wallboxes (sold separately at ₹50,000 and ₹75,000 respectively) provides overnight convenience. A full charge on the 79 kWh pack takes 11.7 hours on the smaller charger, or 8 hours via the 11.2 kW unit.

Performance & Driving Dynamics: Planted, Refined, Rapid

We tested the range-topping 79 kWh variant, and even in the most conservative Eco drive mode, performance felt more than adequate for real-world use. Shift into the sportier modes and the 9S reveals a quietly impressive character — the 286 hp motor builds power in a smooth, linear swell rather than the binary lurch of cheaper EVs. Mahindra claims a 0-100 kph time of 7 seconds and a top speed of 202 kph. Both feel entirely believable.

Overtakes on highways require barely a thought — a gentle right-foot flex sees the big SUV surge past effortlessly. The five regenerative braking modes and one-pedal driving option add meaningful versatility; once acclimatised to the strongest regen setting, urban driving becomes genuinely low-effort.

The XEV 9S rides on independent suspension at both ends. The entry and mid-spec Pack One and Pack Two trims use frequency-dependent passive damping, while the top-spec Pack Three upgrades to Intelligent Adaptive Suspension. The combination of 18-inch wheels with tall sidewalls and this adaptive setup delivers excellent bump absorption — potholes and broken tarmac that would upset lesser cars are absorbed with composure. The ride quality is, frankly, class-leading.

Refinement is another area of genuine achievement. Wind noise and tyre roar remain admirably suppressed even at motorway speeds, creating a hushed, premium ambience that makes long journeys considerably less fatiguing. The four-wheel disc brakes inspire confidence and bring this substantial SUV to a halt with authority, though pedal feel could benefit from greater progressive feedback — a minor but noticeable area for improvement.

Variants, Pricing & Value: The Game-Changer

Mahindra has always been a brand that punches above its weight on value, and with the XEV 9S, they’ve arguably delivered their most audacious pricing yet. The lineup spans six variants across three pack levels:

VariantBatteryEx-Showroom Price
Pack One Above59 kWh / 79 kWh₹19.95 – ₹23.99 lakh
Pack Two Above70 kWh / 79 kWh₹24.99 – ₹26.99 lakh
Pack Three79 kWh₹28.45 lakh
Pack Three Above79 kWh₹29.45 lakh

To put those figures in perspective: the entry XEV 9S at ₹19.95 lakh undercuts the base XEV 9E by nearly ₹2 lakh — yet it offers a third row of seats, more features, and three battery options. The top-spec Pack Three Above at ₹29.45 lakh is roughly ₹1 lakh cheaper than the equivalent XEV 9E. And the base variant sits in the same price territory as the XUV 700 AX7. Considering you’re getting a born-electric platform, 521+ km of range, seven seats, and a lifetime battery warranty at that price, the value equation is frankly extraordinary.

The Competition: Alone at the Top

In terms of direct three-row electric SUV rivals, the XEV 9S operates in near-isolation. The BYD eMax 7 exists as a three-row EV in India, but it is an MPV with a fundamentally different character and appeal. No other manufacturer currently offers a purpose-built, born-electric seven-seat SUV in this price bracket in the Indian market. The XEV 9S is, for the moment, a segment of one — and Mahindra knows it.

★ Our Verdict

The Mahindra XEV 9S is one of those rare products that does exactly what it promises — and then some. By grafting the familiarity and practicality of the XUV 700 onto the INGLO platform’s electric excellence, Mahindra has created an SUV with genuine, broad-spectrum appeal. It’s fast enough to thrill, refined enough to impress, practical enough for real families, and priced aggressively enough to make you seriously question whether you need to look elsewhere.

The third row has its limitations for adults, and there are ergonomic niggles with the tech-forward interior. But these are minor complaints against a backdrop of outstanding value, industry-leading battery warranties, rapid charging capability, and a ride quality that rivals cars costing considerably more.

In a market still dominated by ICE SUVs, the XEV 9S may well be the car that finally convinces the Indian family buyer to make the switch. It is Mahindra’s most important EV yet — and quite possibly their best car, period.
